When I was in Amalfi coast 5 weeks ago, the digs of Pompei was open. I have never hear about any restauration by the news here in Italy and, believe me, if it had happened, it would do a lot of rumor here!! Anyway maybe that your friend has heard about some houses inside the digs are closed for resoration NOT all the Pompei digs (you know, Pompei digs are a city!). It often happens.
