Subject: Driving to San Francisco |
So, Lyn, I am very pleased to respond to your note about your car trip this
Xmas from Dallas to SF to So Cal. If you have time on the drive out for a
sidetrip, I recommend either Mesa Verde National Park (Anasazi ruins in
southern Colorado) or Canyon de Chelly National Monument in eastern
Arizona. If you visit these or any other national parks on your trip,
please try to coordinate your trip to join a ranger tour. They almost
always add a lot to the experience.
If the weather is clear when you are in SF, you can get picture postcard views of the skyline from Marin County. Either take the ferry to Tiburon or Sausalito or else drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and then immediately turn left and follow the road along the Marin Headlands. Be sure to take plenty of film! With a car, you could make a day trip of it by also going on Muir Woods to see the redwoods. If you are looking for hotel recommendations in SF, check out the hotels in the Joie de Vivre group - http://www.sftrips.com/hotels/. Finally, you must drive Highway 1 for at least part of your trip south from SF to Huntington Beach. Monterey and Big Sur are still as gorgeous as ever. Try to stop at least for a drink at the Ventana Inn in Big Sur (http://www.ventanainn.com/ventana.htm) Cheers, Mark Los Angeles |
