|Subject: Re: Accomodation Tuscany|
We were in Tuscany this past September and stayed in a lovely hotel just outside of Montemerano, between Pitigliano and the coast (Maremma).
Villa Acquaviva - Montemerano Tel: (0564) 602890 - Fax: (0564) 602895 There is a web site but I can't find the number at this moment. I will try looking for it tomorrow.
The rooms are delightfully furnished, the breakfast area (now also serving dinner) is beautiful - completely enclosed in glass. There is a pool with lots of open space between the different farmhouses, some old and some new. The owners tend an active vineyard on the premises and offer discounts for the thermal spas in the region, notably at Saturnia. The drive to Pitigliano was under 1/2 hour and it took about 45 minutes to reach Orbetello and the coast.
We have travelled to Tuscany many times and have returned to the southern section on three occasions. A few years ago, we stayed in the tiny fishing village of Porto Ercole, on the Monte Argentario mainland and found it to be interesting. This is a different part of Tuscany and caters mostly to Italian tourists. We return to the south mostly because of the outstanding views of Pitigliano with its medieval stone houses perched on soft tufa rock filled with Etruscan tombs, the hot sulphur waters of the Cascate del Gorello which will soothe those weary joints and sore feet and is free for all to enjoy, the superb fish available in the restaurants of Porto Ercole &Porto Santo Stefano and to eat at Da Caino, one the best restaurants in all of Tuscany. All these villages as well as Sovana &Orbetello have something of interest although a week may be a little long, depending on what you are looking to do.
