|Subject: Southwest England (was Cornwall)|
Sally, Janet, Frances, Joan, Margaret and Ziners,
Well, great minds certainly think alike! Mevagissey, Dartmoor, Exmoor, the New Forest, Heligan, Wells Cathedral, Beaulieu: all on my short list!
I also must second Frances's recommendations for Lyme Regis (paid my visit to the Cobb as a Jane Austen fan, though), Hardy's house (we had an unbelievable afternoon at the house and strolling nearby woods; also visited Maiden Castle, St Augustine's well and the Rude Man on the same day) and Stourhead, where I would return in a minute. Frances: we seem to like the same sort of places, so I am definitely following your other recommendations.
Our trip is beginning to take shape. I believe that we are going to head southwest from London and take in some of the sights and places recommended by the above Ziners.
We are not fans of B&Bs (to tell the truth, I can do them, because I like breakfast and chatting with strangers, but Kurt is totally anti-B&B and demands anonymity and loads of privacy when traveling) so if anyone can recommend cheap hotels that are worth planning around, I would appreciate it.
I will certainly ask about specific towns and areas in the near future. I am going to print out all of your recommendations and plot a trail. We will probably train to some place like Plymouth or Exeter, or even Bath if time permits, and rent a car from there. We have driven out of London once, and the fight in the car wasn't worth it. ;-)
Thanks to all, and keep the tips rolling in! Debbie in Pittsburgh
