If you have access to a car, there are some fabulous caves in that area. They are called the Grotte (caves) di Frasassi, and are located off the Ancona - Rome superstrada (toll-free highway), about 50 kms in the direction of Rome.
To get an idea of what they're like, you can see some pictures of them at http://www.frasassi.com/ Click on the le grotte link.
You can only visit the caves by guided tour (approx. 45 minutes); no one is allowed in on their own. They give tours all day long, except between 12:30 and 3:00, when they're closed for lunch.
In the summer of 1982, I was a tour guide in central Italy, and brought a group of tourists to the caves every week. I never got tired of seeing them!
