Subject: Driving from Paris to Lake Orta |
Hi Gavin,
Both Troyes and Dijon make an interesting stop on your way to Switzerland. You could cover one or both, and, after Dijon, I would go through Besançon which is also nice. Coming to beautiful landscapes, the road that goes southeast of Besançon through Ornans ( vallèe du Loup) is really charming, bordering a nice river through a lot of trees , and Ornans itself,if I remember well( I was there 20 years ago) is a gem of a village with a fairy tale wooden bridge over the river. After Pontarlier, enter Switzerland at Ste.Croix and then you can take the autoroute that goes to Lausanne,Martighy,Sion ,with a lot of beautiful valleys on your left and right ( I especially love Crans-Montana and Leukerbad), some very interesting sights too ( including Lausanne, Chateaux Chillon near Montreux on the lake, Martigny's Fondation Gianadda with interesting contemporary art exhibitions, and Sion) and in Brig there's a service that takes your car on the train under Simplon pass(or you can follow the road up to the pass at 6200 feet)Then it's a short hop down Val d'Ossola to Lake Orta. Have a nice time in Europe, ciao! Leonardo |
