Have you considered seeing Herculaneum? I probably get boring about this, but we went to Pompeii and Herculaneum in the same day. Pompeii was intereting, Herculaeum was 'gob-smacking'. Even charred wooden beams in some of the houses! Much more intact, walk on the mosaic in a virtually intact Roman bath, etc.

More compact also. And gives a better feel of a Roman town.
