Charlotte, Here are several hotels in your price range....under $100 CAD. I couldn't find any reasonably priced ones near the Chamartin train station or Plaza de Colon. These are from the Rick Steve's Spain &Portugal guide. The 1st is in the pedestrian zone between Puerto del Sol &Gran Via. The book says to use the Metro: Sol to get to it.

Hotel Europa $83.50 CAD + tax, breakfast is 5 euros. ..has red-carpet charm; a royal salon, plush halls with happy Muzak, polished wood floors, attentive staff, &80 squeaky-clean rooms with balconies overlooking the pedestrian zone or an inner courtyard. http://www.hoteleuropa.net/

The next 2 are at Gran Via #44. Use Calleo Metro stop.

Hostal Residencia Miam ..$58.45 CAD including tax. ...clean &quiet, with 11 well-lit rooms (3 with private bath), padded doors, Telephone &fax 91-521-1464. Owned by the same family, Hostal Alibel, big, airy rooms. phone 91-521-0051, $45.92 CAD incl. tax. no credit cards.

Also found the Nuria Hotel in my computer system. IT is $55 + tax CAD. 8 rooms, located in the city center at 200 metres rom the Gran Via in Madrid, at 1.87 miles from Prado, 5 minute walk from Royal Palace.

Hope this helps.
