In all my travels, I have only been attacked by a pickpocket once - I was
in Venice on a boat in the grand canal, reached in my purse to get my camera
and found a hand there - I slapped it and the hand walked away with its
owner.
I never carry a money belt. I carry a larger purse with zipper compartments
over one shoulder. I only carry the cash I need for a day or two, just in
case anyway. But I am alert to my surroundings. Even when I stop on the
street to consult a map, I pay attention to who is near me. Even though I
travel alone most of the time, I've never felt threatened.
