We spent 2 weeks in Kephalonia 4 years ago (pre Captain Corelli!) Its a
wonderful island and hiring a car is essential although we only hired one
for 4 days and that enabled us to see all of the island easily, spending
mornings/afternoons in different villages and on different beaches. Drive
over the mountains and frighten yourself to death with the drive up the
precipitous west coast!
We stayed in Skala which I would certainly recommend. A good sprinkling of
tavernas all serving good food and with charming friendly staff. A lovely
(pebbley) beach and some interesting walks (although it was VERY hot!)
Another village we really liked was Aghia Efemia - if we returned it would
be there or Skala. Not many hotels or apartments have aircon - a hotel I
would love to stay in is the Nine Muses at Skala. They were building it when
we were there. Friends have since stayed and said it's wonderful. Spacious
luxury aircon rooms, lovely pool, right on the beach. We stayed at the Tara
Beach Hotel nearby. Wonderful position also right on the beach, adequate
rooms and full of Athenians on holiday so a great atmosphere.
There are some pretty beaches and villages on the south side but the narrow
lanes leading to them were choked with traffic in the high season and the
beaches were very busy. Take a day trip to Ithaca - wonderful!
