Subject: Netherlands Trip Report - Part 2
Hello again, Brugge, Belgium (a short side trip from Holland) - This is a charming city but most people, including us, are constantly consulting their maps. Once you get it figured out, it is time to leave. In Brugge: Chocolates! I had thought to try all the chocolate shops in Brugge so I could pick the best to take home. This was not possible for me. I was actually getting tired of chocolates. Our favorites were Dumon, Leonidas, and Sukerbuyc with the latter having a slight edge in taste though being a tad more costly. They are associated with a tea shop across the street. Don't miss it! Lace Ladies at the Lace Center. So much work goes into these pieces. We tried to get here first but they were closed for Easter Monday. We could have done a little better with our lace purchases in the shop here. The adjacent museum is a must also. First see what the ladies do (I think they are only there in the afternoons), then visit the lace museum, and then go back and watch the ladies again. Back in the Netherlands: Keukenhof Gardens - blessed with a warm couple of weeks before we came, the tulips were blooming along with the earlier spring flowers. Words don't do it justice and neither do photos. Next time we will try to view more of the nearby bulb fields. They are in some ways even more awesome than the gardens. The Black Tulip Museum in Lisse is quite interesting, too,if you are into science and plant cultivation. Leiden - Boerhaave Museum - filled with early medical equipment, ancient physics department models, and hands on activities, you can guess who really enjoyed this place. It had enough to interest both of us which is really a good thing. Canal boat ride - The day was sunny, the boat uncrowded, and the views just wonderful. We had great food, interesting lodgings, and a great trip! BTW, the miser in me is happy to report that we saved an additional 93 Euros by using the Museumjaarkaart. (Last year after paying for the pass we were 77 Euros ahead!) Money saved on this trip can be used on the next!
