Just a couple of extra bits of info.
Gasoline here in France is about Euro 1 per litre (USD 4+ per gallon), but diesel is around Euro 0.75 per litre. As diesel is more efficient it gives about 30% better mileage too. It is readily available throughout Europe, so it makes sense to rent a diesel car if you have the option.
Beware French autopumps may not take your credit cards.
Finally the price of fuel here varies widely. Cheapest in supermarkets, average in gas stations, most expensive on the autoroute. The difference can be 25%.
