Subject: Hometown - Brisbane/Gold Coast/in-between (Qld, Australia)
Hi Ziners! Responding to the great new thread idea - showing visitors Your Hometown... I live half-way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Sacrilegious as it may be for an Aussie and Queenslander at that, I'm not actually a beach-goer! But when we have guests - and depending on their ages and inclinations, and the weather - contrary to popular advertising, it's not sunshine *every* day of the year ;-) - we might take them to:

South Bank Parklands, Brisbane Great area just across the river from Brisbane City (walk over via the new pedestrian bridge, or catch a City Cat ferry) Over there are our Art Gallery, Museum, an IMAX theatre and cinemas, great markets (Fri night and weekends) and a great family entertainment outdoor area/complex including a patrolled/life-guard beach/pool, BBQs, mini amphitheatre for shows, shops, restaurants...

Tamborine Mountain (Gold Coast hinterland) Great markets every other Sunday, nice little winery (maybe more than one!), some great weekend getaways accom (from B&B to the more luxurious), lovely eateries and beautiful views, shops, O'Reilly's (, bush walks, accom, bird-watching, hand-feed wild parrots (lorikeets, rosellas, king parrots), tree top boardwalk)

Theme Parks (if you are so inclined) Half way to Gold Coast - Movie World (small scale version of Universal Studios) Gold Coast - Sea World Half way to Gold Coast - DreamWorld Half way to Gold Coast - Wet&Wild (water fun park with dive-in movies during summer) Gold Coast - Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (feed North of Brisbane - Australia Zoo (The Crocodile Hunter's Zoo :))

Mt Cootha Take a drive up for a wonderful lunch or dinner (perhaps at The Summit restaurant) and a great view of the city.

University of Queensland, St Lucia campus During the flowering season for the Jacarandas (varies from Sept - Nov) the grounds down by the river and lakes are covered in purple carpet - the shed flowers are amazing. Nice cafes, or picnic by the lakes with the ducks!

Beaches :) (all second hand information as it's been yonks since I've been there...) *** Please swim between the flags *** Currumbin (north of the Gold Coast) - beaches! Gold Coast - a bit too touristy/commercial but still famous beach Noosa (hour and a bit north of Brisbane) - shops, nice beach, up market

Australian Wool Shed (just north of Brisbane) Australiana, demonstrations - Sheep shearing, mustering. Good fun :)

Further afield... Montville and Maleny are a nice day trip up in the mountains...

Who knows what I've forgotten! :) Megan Brisbane, Australia
