=====================
Sunday June 16, 2002 will mark the 3rd consecutive year of the
European Day of the Jewish Culture across 21 European countries. This
new edition confirms the success encountered during the Day in 2001
which gathered 170 000 visitors across Europe.
>From the regional to the European level
Initiated in the department of the Bas-Rhin (Alsace) in 1996 under
the name of Open day, this initiative of the Agency of Tourist
Development of the Bas-Rhin and B'nai B'rith Hirschler, was extended
to all of France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain in 1999.
Today, this event is now co-organised at a European level by four
organisations namely: l'Agence de Développement Touristique du Bas-
Rhin, B'nai B'rith Europe, the European Council of Jewish Communities
and the Road of Spanish Judaism (Red de Juderias de Espana).
Discovering the cultural and historical heritage
During this day, the general public is invited to discover the
historical and architectural heritage (synagogues, cemeteries, baths
ritual), as well as the traditions of Judaism. The programme includes
a variety of animations especially organised for Day: opened doors,
exhibitions, conferences and concerts. The theme, which will be
covered this year, will be:
Jewish calendar and festivals through art, music, cooking, etc..
A new stage marked by the creation the Route of European of Jewish
Heritage
Beyond this day, a wider project of a European Route of Jewish
Heritage is in the process of being created, under the auspices of
the Council of Europe's European Institute of Cultural Routes.
