If you have a reservation, you have a specific compartment, whether it is identified on your reservation or not. You can board the train one hour before departure. There will be conductor to direct you to the proper car. Your car will have a porter who will show you to your compartment. He will then take your tickets and passports. This is normal. You will get your passports back in the morning, along with a little breakfast. By the way, I like to wear ear plugs on night trains, it helps cut down on the random noises that will be occurring all night. Have a good trip.
