Thank you for clarifying that. As I said, a highway can be a 2-lane road. Autostrada translates to motorway in Britain, but it's hard to find a single translation for American usage. We say Interstate, but some of these aren't designated as such, and it doesn't work in Canada. Freeway is favored in the West and expressway in the Midwest and East, particularly in cities. I think the best equivalent is superhighway, but we hear it more often in information superhighway than for roads.
