Subject: Re: Biarritz Surf Festival and Les Landes, France
Hi

I'm not a surfer, but know this area fairly well. I can confirm there are a lot of VW campers with boards on the roof !

There are beaches stretching from Bordeaux to the Pyrenees. They are pretty empty, backed by dunes and forests with villages every few miles. Village beaches are clothed and topless, others optional (naturist, topless or clothed as you choose).

I was last in Hossegor end of 1999, when I visited the area whilst searching for a retirement location.

It is an interesting place to stay. Within easy reach are -

DAX ..... town with roman remains including hot water baths San Sebastian .......... lots of history and probably the best tapas St Jean Pied de Port ........ charming mountain town Biarritz / St Jean de Luz ....... upmarket beach resorts Pamplona .... historic town with famous bull running feria Pyrennees ....... for skiing, walking

There are excellent, inexpensive sea food restaurants on both sides of the border. There are many spa towns in the area too.

The only negative I have is that the sea can wash up debris on the beach in certain combinations of tide/wind. In the late 70s the beaches were spotless. The French blame the Spanish, who deny it !
