Subject: Switzerland Questions to Tarja
Dear Mike

You asked for help with driving in Switzerland. No Problem!

Q 1. Could you help me with the route from the airport to Chur? It looks like I am heading for the A3 then to A13 but getting there through Zurich looks a bit confusing. Can you help with directions through Zurich? (Some maps say N3 and N13 - which way is autobahn marked??)

Answer: The roads do have numbers but you don't need to know them. Drive out of the airport and follow the GREEN signs (green is autobahn, blue is a normal road) to Zrich. Coming nearer to town you either see 'Chur' or 'transit' signs (If you see 'Chur', follow it, and if you only see 'transit', follow it) and you just follow them. It goes right thru the middle of the town but it is very clearly marked, you can not miss it. Once you are on autobahn on the southern side (or south west) you can decide if you want to drive nearer to the lake, but it is best to get thru Zrich following the green signs.

Q 2. Is the A3 or A13 a toll road in this area to my destination?

Answer: If you rent a car in Zrich I believe it should include a 'vignette' which allows you to drive on the autobahn. Check you have it when you rent the car. There are no toll roads in Switzerland. The 'vignette' in your window allows you to drive on all autobahn of the country.

Q 3. I arrive in the morning so I am not in a rush to get to Chur and it would be nice to take a nice leisurely scenic drive to Chur. Should I consider taking the Seestrasse along the West side of the lake instead of the autobahn?

Answer: I would recommend it. The autobahn is above the lake and in fact you don't see much of the lake if you drive there. You can drive down from the autobahn anywhere e.g. in Wollishofen, Kilchberg, Rschlikon and then follow the blue signs to the east and this way you see the lake very nicely. There is not much traffic on that road. If you really have time, cross the lake in Pf#ffikon to go over to Rapperswil. It is a nice little town.

Q 4. Should I consider a stop in Vaduz?

Answer: Well, it is the smallest capital of the world probably, has around 5000 inhabitants, so it is interesting! The view of the castle is nice but you cannot go inside.

Q 5. If you advise taking the Seestrasse - after that - what additional scenic route would you advise to complete the drive to Chur?

Answer: I strongly recommend to take the 'blue' road between Weesen and Walenstadt along Walensee lake. The autobahn is built inside the mountain and so it is mainly a tunnel and you see nothing and can not stop. If you take the normal road you can enjoy the spectacular views of the lake and the Churfirsten mountain peaks behind it. I find it very beautiful! If you have time and want a nice view from the top, take the road to Amden from Weesen and enjoy the mountain view.

If you have time and interest, a road from Bad Ragaz leads to Tamina Schlucht-gorge.

I hope this helps. If you need any further info, feel free to ask.
