Versailles and Giverny can be easily done independently, without a guided tour.

I saw that other Ziners have already pointed out websites for you to read. If you want something in print, go to your public library to check out Rick Steves' Paris (or France) book. He described it in great details on how to get to either places from Paris.

If you go to Giverny, try to have lunch at the restaurant of the American Impressionist museum, 100 yeard before Monet's garden. Rick's book said that too, but I had not read that far down the page when I was buying lunch outside of Monet's garden.
