I made the day trip to Monet's garden at Giverny - it's a wonderful experience :)
Make sure you look up the train timetables before you go as the service from Paris to Vernon is in frequent. Try using the Deutsche Bahn web site. The only link I have in English is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?protocol=http:&ld=20&newrequest=yes& I searched briefly on From: Paris To: Vernon 08:00 returning 16:00 (and your date in dd.mm.yy format). Then check out the return trip options.
When I bought my ticket at the service counter the lady gave me a photocopied sheet which had the bus times on it as well. I already knew I wanted the *early* train so that I could get there at opening time and then catch the most suitable train back in the early afternoon. The train ride is about an hour in duration.
As far as the buses go: they meet the trains and you just queue up and when the bus is full it leaves :) A lot of people were also organising their own cab-sharing too. From the bus drop off point it's a short walk to the gardens.
When I was there May 2001 they only took cash for ticket entry.
You might also like to check out this web site for information and tips and tricks on when to visit, and the flowers showing. http://giverny.org/monet/welcome.htm
(My trip journal web site has some more commentary if you are interested http://www.geocities.com/megangrenenger/ in the Paris Solo folder for Paris 2 - Giverny).
I can not overemphasize the importance of finding out the train schedules in advance :)
I believe it's also supposed to be lovely to have lunch at the American Museum there but I'm afraid I don't know any more details...
If you have any more questions please ask away! :) Megan Brisbane, Australia
