Subject: Re: Laptop use outside North America |
Hi John,
I've used several laptops abroad and have generally been
successful. As others have pointed out, recent laptops are dual
voltage so for powering up all you'll need is the appropriate plug
adapter. The other issue is the modem connection. You will need a
suitable telephone adapter as well as a line tester to ensure that
the incoming signal is not excessive. I've used adapters and
testers from http://www.igo.com/Travel/ and found them quite
reliable. You will want to pay particular attention to the number
sequence used when attempting to access the gateway number. In many
cases, you will need a numerical prefix before the access number.
You may also need one or more pauses, which you can insert with
commas. There's a bit of trial and error, but with reasonable
preparation and patience you will do fine.
