You should be OK in May for midges in Scotland. They are at their most fierce in a long warm still summer evenings near a loch and under trees!

BTW some folk swear by any citrus based insect repellant for midges. They do have a reputation but the bites are merely irritating and itchy and not as bad as mosquito bites, my husband does not react to them at all where as I come out in an itchy bump, so you may be lucky!
