A few points about the kilometric ticket: you still need to pay the supplement for InterCity and Eurostar trains (the trains most people would want to take for a long distance). As the Mods say, you need to get the ticket stamped for each route you take, but not at connecting stations; that is, if you go from Rome to Perugia changing at Foligno, you need to get it stamped in Rome but not Foligno.

It may not work if you have pass, but the site allows one to book a ticket and reservation online and pick it up from self-service machines in the principal stations.
