You didn't mention where you would be flying out of and the cost of air fare varies considerably from point to point. If you want a good idea as to cost, I would go on Orbitz.com and check the various airport options. For example, if you are in the New York area, you have three different airports to choose from. You may also want to check flying into Venice or Milan as well as Florence or Rome. One good thing is that there is trains from each of those locations that can zip you to your destingation. I'm a budget traveler, but one must outway cost vs convenience.
If you know where you want to stay, even though it appears you are going in Feb or Mar which is low season, go ahead and reserve now. That way you have your accommodations taken care of and out of the way.
