|Subject: Re: Porto|
We just got back from Porto last night. It's a beautiful city, but due to it's current UNESCO World Heritage site designation, it's undergoing major renovations/reconstruction...EVERYWHERE!!!
I wouldn't let this stop you from going however; just try to get a hotel in the UNESCO core area, then you can walk to 95% of what you'll want to see. We stayed at the Mercure Batalha, very good location; and reasonably priced. Did I say 'walk' maybe 'climb' would be more suitable. The city is on the banks of the Douro River and they're steep, much akin to San Francisco (so a colleage from there tells me). So you'll be doing a lot of walking down and up steep streets, stairs etc. You could take a cab, but you'll waste a lot of time and Euros...the traffic in town is horrendous!
Before you go, drop us a line (or read/file) our upcoming travelogue on the area, to get some more info on must see places and good restaurants.
