In this way we found a nice one-star hotel, Il Perseo, near the Duomo. We were quite happy with it. The rooms were simple and clean. We extended our stay because my sister and my mum were sick, and the last night we stayed at a room without private bathroom, but the shared facilities were also spotless.
My sister has been in Florence afterwards, in August. She stayed for a week at the hotel Porta Faenza, and she was also very happy with it, but as a three-star, I think that it might be more expensive in October and November.
