I think it can be wiser for him to go from Sevilla to the Algarve
(I´m almost sure that it will be a bus service and not a train), and
then go up to Lisbon, instead of doing Sevilla, Lisbon and Lagos.
Or he could think about changing his itinerary, and head up from Sevilla to Cáceres, in Extremadura, a really interesting small city and with plenty of universitary life. From Cáceres there is a night train to Lisboa (it´s the Trenhotel that leaves from Madrid-Chamartin and arrives to Lisboa at 8:00 am, formerly there was also a day train, but it doesn´t run anymore).
