That's an entertaining story, Ira, about your bad experience with Eurostar. However, you're mistaken when you say that Intercity trains do not require a supplement. They do require one, but it's smaller than for the Eurostar. People should be aware that it is not enough simply to ask for a ticket from A to B or use a kilometric ticket; they'll need to specify that they want to take the Intercity train and pay the supplement.
