Subject: Re: Open Jaw in the American Southwest
Debbie, it is not a problem getting air tickets open jaw. It is the car rental costs that are punitive. We had everything arranged for a trip 2 days after 9/11 which was cancelled by the airline.

We had booked open jaw flying into Albuquerque and out of Las Vegas. The best possible car rental deal was still outrageously expensive compared to a circle. We still haven't done that trip but when we do, we will fly in and out of Las Vegas.

By the way, our itinerary was: Albuquerque, Santa Fe, San Ildefonso Pueblo and Bandelier, Taos and Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, Canyon Lands - Island in the Sky area, Arches and Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon (North) and Las Vegas (just one hectic night here!) 29 days total.

We were planning to plane camp bringing a small tent and just enough camping equipment for overnights in the Bandelier area, Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Monument Valley, Bryce, Grand Canyon North and maybe one or two other places. We had planned to buy a disposable cooler and a new 1 burner camp stove in Albuquerque (you can't fly with a used stove in your luggage). With camping, we would have been able to be right at the sights, ready for a late evening or early morning stroll.

We still haven't done that trip but will some day!
