Subject: WOW Weekend in Cornwall
Hi Ziners Last weekend we went to Cornwall with some friends. Although we live only an hour from the Cornish/Devon border we haven't been there for a couple of years. Our friends had booked a National Trust cottage for 3 nights and although other friends have stayed in NT cottages this was a first for us. The cottage was in Durgan which is a tiny hamlet on the Helford river - often referred to as the Helford Passage. As we drove down a steep narrow lane we caught glimpses of rocky coves and wooded riverbanks. When we arrived outside the cottage it was a real WOW!

We were staying at 'The Old School House' which was right on the small pebbly beach complete with its own slipway had we had our own little boat to launch! Inside was simple and tasteful - not a swirly patterned carpet or piece of cheap furniture in sight. The view from the tall sitting room windows was just stunning. The creek unfolded before us, tiny fishing boats chugged past, moored sailing dinghys bobbed up and down and cormorants repeatedly dived and resurfaced. I spent ages just sitting on the window-seat watching this fabulous view.

The weather was awful - rain and drizzle most of the time, but we still loved this area. We went to the Penlee House gallery in Penzance to see a wonderful exhibition of Newlyn artists, wandered along the coastal path (to the pub of course!) and generally chilled out completely. It was too wet to visit gardens which was a real shame. We were just below Glendurgan gardens but those who know Cornwall know that there are so many gardens in Cornwall you could spend weeks visiting all of them!

We would have probably gone to the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden project but as we can reach these on a day trip from home we just thought we'd mooch around the immediate area and enjoy the tranquillity, stunning scenery and excellent pub food.

I would recommend Ziners to look at NT cottages - they are in amazing locations, many on the site of NT properties and you don't have to be a member to book them. Check out:

We have already booked a long weekend in October for next year!
