Subject: Re: Saint Paul de Vence
Hi Tom

We recently returned from France including some time spent in St Paul de Vence. Yes, the guide books are correct - it is very touristy. But I would not let that stop you. The village is a perfect example of a classic medieval 'village perche' and is filled to the brim with the most wonderful art shops and galleries. Try visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon before and/or after the tour buses. The Foundation Maeght, just outside St Paul, is one of Europe's finest modern art museums.

If you need accommodations, I highly recommend Le Hameau, a short walk outside the village. The hotel is charming and its location and price cannot be beat. What you save here you can spend on a most pretentious but wonderful lunch at Colombe d'Or which houses one of the finest private art collections. Just watching the chic Paris ladies, complete with very well behaved poodles, is worth the price alone.

We have included St Paul on every visit to the south of France and still find it to be magical.

Enjoy
