I've also stayed at the Hotel Suecia, and liked it primarily for it's
perfect location. It's a 4 star and the rooms are comfortable, but not
fantastic. Once I was upgraded to a suite, (I have no idea why), and that
was quite a room, with a bathroom bigger than one of their standard
bedrooms. Prices at the Suecia can vary quite a bit, from around 85$ up to
$200 a night so it pays to check the various booking sites. Some rates
will include a very good breakfast buffet, which otherwise runs $12 to $15.
I've mentioned one of my favorite tapas bars in Madrid before, which is La Trucha. It's within walking distance of the hotel on a pedestrian walk near the Plaza de Santa Ana. And around the corner from La Trucha is a very good and lively family restaurant, Hylogui. Going in the other direction from the Hotel Suecia, you can walk to La Barraca, a restaurant specializing in paella. The owners are from Valencia, which is where I want my paella chef to come from. I always eat here at least once whenever I am in Madrid.
