I'm a Train Buff too. In 1983 we took our 2 children, aged 11 and 13, from Montreal to Vancouver on the Canadian. Yes, at that time it was running from Montreal!
We had 2 connecting bedrooms with the boys sharing one. We kept the wall open during the day, making a suite with 4 chairs and lots of room.
On our way west, in Northern Ontario, I asked if my son and I could ride in the engine between two stations. Permission was granted and we rode about 200 miles gazing at the scenery from the cab. The tracks were never straight, winding around the many lakes and hills of the wilderness.
It was a marvelous experience.
