We also planned to spend 4 days in the area last April. Upon research of the various beautiful places to see in the area I knew that it will be quite difficult to just use the public transport solely. To save time, we scrimped on hotels and got a car to bring us around.
I would suggest to take the train from Rome to Naples then proceed to Sorrento and make that your base. From Sorrento you can take the ferry to Capri and spend a day there. Another day you can take the bus or hire a car to bring you to Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, Pompeii (at least half day), Paestum (at least half day).
In our case we slept for two nights in Positano since it has a different character of its own and two nights in Sorrento. We decided later to cut one night in Rome to be able to go around Naples for a day since it is also a very interesting city.
