For years I've taken fresh fruit and rolls on early morning flights. I get a lot of attention when the other passengers start smelling fresh strawberries. Don't worry about your meal being hot and just settle in on bringing sandwiches (without tomatos), chips, snack bars, cut up veggies, whole or cut up fruit, boiled eggs to be eaten early on--its just for the flight -- you can get your hot food after you get to your destination. I'm guessing you shouldn't bring any plastic forks or knives - so I wouldn't risk it. I don't like for them to find anything they don't like in my carry-on.
