Oban is a wonderful town as well as the jumping-off for the ferries. We loved it! We stayed in the hostel there on the Esplanade, which has an older part with just rooms, & a newer part (the Lodge) with nice rooms with bath. Website for Scottish Youth Hostels http://www.syha.org.uk There may even be family rooms. You can easily walk into the center, & there are nice walks along the bay from the hostel. As with most Scottish hostels, there's an internet point in the main building.
We were there in April & had the kitchen & dining area in the Lodge to ourselves over the several days we were there.
>From Glasgow, we went northwest via Loch Lomond & the hostel there is very nice also, in an old country house overlooking pastures & the Loch. It made a nice waystop on our way north to Oban.
