With regard to going to the Marais, or 4th quarter, it is an excellent place to stay in Paris. It abounds with hidden facades of 16th, 17th, and 18th century hotels particuliers, or mansions. It is less busy than many other areas of this tourist city. I lived for a while in the Place du Marche St. Catherine right in the heart of the Marais or 4th arr. near Metro St. Paul. Of course, you have the Place des Vosges built in the early 17th century nearby which is also a hidden treat. There are some wonderful small restaurants around this area but to just wander the quiet streets is great. Also, the Hotel Sale houses the Musee Picasso. Worth a visit.
