I'd like to second what Dianne said most vehemently. The Australian desert is wild and lonely -- this is not like a ride down an interstate in the USA, with exits and gas stations every few miles. There are miles and miles and miles of nothing but sand and some wildlife that isn't always friendly ;-) No pay phones on the next corner either, and our mobile phones didn't have reception out of the towns.
We did a tour from Alice Springs to Ayres Rock last July, and we had a private guide in a landcruiser -- he was in radio contact with his base, and was trained in bush techniques in case of emergency.
Please research this very carefully!
And do have a great trip when you get to Australia.... it's a wonderful place!
