Sounds like you are used to hot weather! Provided you have airconditioning, and know that your sightseeing may have to be done early morning and late afternoon, it's probably better to put up with the discomfort, rather than not go at all. I think you could expect about 40 degrees C, but this varies of course.
As far as I remember, the main highway is OK and fairly well frequented, but it can certainly be dangerous going on minor roads.
In the wet it will probably be OK, but you'd have to be aware that there could be a major downpour with subsequent flooding. People have been known to be stuck for a week or more until the flooding goes down. That would be a real Australian experience.
