Subject: Atlantic Crossing
Hello All:

John Rapinchuk was wondering about sailing the Atlantic from Lisbon to St. Thomas. Many years ago I sailed on the Ascania from Montreal to Liverpool the first week of June. The crossing took 10 days and the first three nights we made no progress because of icebergs. Coming home we sailed Liverpool to Quebec City. We were on the Franconia, a little bigger than the Ascania but that crossing took eleven days, we were hit by hurricane Connie. This was the last week of August. It was rough. Most of the passengers were seasick, maybe for a day, some for days. I know this is farther north than Lisbon to St Thomas, but the Atlantic is a big, cold, place. Not the place for a cruise.
