|Subject: Re: Paradores and Pousadas|
Last September Jan and I traveled from Bilbao to Lisbon staying in Paradores and Pousadas in all but two places (Porto and Lisbon). I agree with Wayne that they are wonderful places to stay; I disagree on Batahla whose staff for us was attentive and bright with humor. We found the Paradores to be economical; we found the Pousadas to be priced at market. The one thing that we did find is that you must book early (we booked 6 months ahead) for they are quite popular and fill up quickly. We also found that if your schedule is flexible, you can sometimes call at the last minute and get a reservation where someone has cancelled (we tried it in Vic and Cardona and it worked in both places). The latter approach is risky, but it often makes travel an adventure.
