I have been to both Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende. There is a story that Cantinflas was giving an interview and one of the reporters asked him if he might retire to San Miguel de Allende (where he owned a home). He replied, No, I don't speak English. Hopefully that gives you my impression as well. Wonderful artist colony, restaurants, etc., and you don't need to speak any Spanish.
San Miguel is a beautiful town, but in my opinion can not begin to compete with real Mexico. Oaxaca has a local cuisine, incredible archeological sites, great town plaza, etc., etc.
Just my two cents.
