Definitely not a fancy restaurant, but extremely authentic Italian in the West Village is Pepe Verde at 559 Hudson Street, between Perry and West 11th Streets. The prices are reasonable and the food is great. You order at the counter from the daily specials and then they serve you at your table. The eggplant parmigiana is so light and tasty. The chicken milanese is the perfect fried chicken cutlet served with arugola. There's also a rich pasta with porcini mushrooms that's well worth the calories. Although this sounds like a commercial, it's not; I recently moved from the neighborhood, and I miss Pepe Verde.
