I haven't taken the train to Edinburgh for many years but I wouldn't fret too much. Safety has been an issue but things are getting better. Think of them the same way you do air accidents. I've seen more car accidents than I of either train or air crashes. And the tickets prices are more likely to do me injury! And trying to sort out the pricing strcuture can also be fatal! Just make you sure you have reserved seats or you may end up standing! Food on the train is variable and pricey for what it is so bring you're own just in case.
The coffee has improved of late - it no longer melts the plastic spoon!
There could be delays if the wrong kind of leaves fall on the track (I kid you not) or points freeze - but I doubt these will be a problem at this time of year.
