Thanks for your replies. I also felt that the online agent should have some responsibility to at least contact Airline 2 on our behalf, but their response was that they have thousands of clients and could not spend their time doing this. In other words, you're on your own. I guess that's the chance you take when you buy discounted tickets... but it's so tempting to save the money upfront, that you ignore the possibility of paying further down the line. Unfortunately my place of residence does not allow me the luxury of picking and choosing among airlines, so if I see what looks like a good deal from an online agent, I take it. I will let you know if I am successful in receiving a refund.
