Hi Michele, I think a common view is that crime in the US is more violent, while crime in Europe is more petty - pickpockets, etc., and more common. Also, tourists are easier to spot in Europe, especially Americans, potentially carrying more money.

With the wide varieties of cities, countrysides, etc., it is difficult to generalize.

Maybe the main reason we watch our belongings more carefully when we travel overseas is simply that we are carrying things that we would not be carrying at home - passports, extra money, tickets, ..., and we're more easily distracted by being in unfamiliar surroundings, like train stations.
