Hi Tom,
As an American I am proud to be one and would not think of masquerading as being a Canadian or from any other country. >From most of what I've read Americans are generally welcomed in France. The last time we were there we found of course cultural differences, but felt comfortable. We don't happen to have any current European plans, but if we did I wouldn't try to be someone I'm not.
Our only upcoming travel plans are a trip to Hawaii so we shouldn't have any
problem being an American there!
