Just like many of the others have said, I, too, have not changed anything at all. I would never lie about being an American. I have been an English teacher in Japan since January. All Westerners stick out like a sore thumb here so the Where are you from? question comes up a lot. Many Japanese opposed the Iraq war even though Prime Minister Koizumi supported it. As I talk to people, the Japanese have the same concerns about terrorism and many are scared to travel. The North Korean threat and SARS in China are the top reasons no one here is traveling. People have been very kind to me ever since I arrived and I have run into no problems what-so-ever. The best advice for anyone is to just be cautious.
