Forget the hat - it speaks American. In Italy, everything that you
wear is a fahion statement, whether you like it or not. So, the
baseball hat will tell a story. Europeans don't care about the sun
unless they can fit it in to their wardrobe. My advice, having
travalled in France and Italy with a bald male companion, is this:
wear a beret if you feel the need but be aware that European men don't
wear hats unless they fit the look. You will look unusual so make
sure your hat is stylish. Discard the North American paranoia about
the sun. Relax, you're on vacation.
