Linda,
We've done three different trips in Britain by train --all great--and
all have included Scotland and lasted 12-20 days. Since you just
asked about England, I'll skip the Scotland details. The first time,
we arrived by ferry from Holland at Harwich and took the train from
there to York then on to Scotland for a week. Returned from Scotland
on a night train to London. From London we took day trips to
Cardiff, Wales and to Cotswolds, using bus and trains. The second
trip was just to northwest Scotland using Highlands and Islands Pass
(trains, ferries, buses). The last one, we took a day trip from
London base to Portsmouth. Then London to Scotland. Returning from
Scotland, we took the train to Haltwhistle to base for exploring the
Hadrian's Wall area. Then train to Penrith and bus to Keswick for a
base for the Lake District. Returned to London via the beautiful
Settle-Carlisle route.
We love train travel and always travel light and try to stay at least
2 or 3 nights in a place before moving on.
